Aluminum wire is safe at the panel and on big feeder runs, but the small 15 and 20 amp branch circuits that feed your outlets and switches have a known failure pattern. Many home insurance carriers in Illinois will charge extra, decline to write a new policy, or require a documented repair before they will renew. The first step is knowing what is behind your walls. Here are four ways to check, and what to do next if you find it.

Check the panel

Open the panel cover slowly. Do not touch anything inside. Look at the wires that land on each breaker.

Copper is the color of a new penny, an orange-red shade that catches the light. Aluminum is a dull silver. It is softer than copper, so you may see flat spots or slight twist marks where it lands on the breaker lug. If you see a mix of dull silver wires and shiny orange wires on the breakers, the home has aluminum branch wiring on at least some circuits.

Look behind a wall plate

Turn the breaker for that outlet off at the panel first. Test the outlet with a voltage tester to confirm it is dead. Unscrew a standard outlet and pull it about one inch out of the box.

Look at the wire color where it lands on the screw. Aluminum is silver, soft to the touch, and gives more than copper when you bend it gently. Some outlets and switches will have CO/ALR stamped on the metal yoke between the screws. CO/ALR means the device is rated for both copper and aluminum, which is a sign that an electrician knew aluminum was present.

Check the breaker stamps

Open the panel cover and read the side of each breaker, not just the front face. Many breakers carry a stamp that lists the wire types they accept.

If you see AL/CU or Al on the side of a breaker, that breaker was rated for aluminum and the installer used it because aluminum was present. A panel full of CU-only breakers points to a copper home. A mix of AL/CU breakers and CU-only breakers points to a home where one or two circuits were swapped over time.

Check the home's wiring history

Look into when your home was built and how it was wired. The build year is the biggest clue to what is behind your walls.

If your home was built between 1965 and 1973, aluminum branch wiring is common on many builds from that era. After 1974, fewer builders used it. Some homes from the late 1970s and 1980s were marketed with an "all copper wiring" line on the original sale brochure as a feature, which is a hint that the rest of the neighborhood was not.

If you have aluminum, what's next

  • Burnt smell near outlets. A fishy or burnt-plastic smell at one outlet, even with nothing plugged in. The smell often shows up before any visible damage.
  • Lights flickering or dimming without cause. Lights that dip when nothing on that circuit has changed. Aluminum connections oxidize and back off the screw over time, and the loose joint shows up as flicker.
  • Sparks or static crackle when plugging in. A small visible spark when you plug a lamp or charger into an outlet, paired with a crackle sound from inside the wall plate.
  • Breakers that trip without explanation. A breaker that trips when nothing big was running. Arcing at a loose aluminum connection draws current spikes that the breaker reads as a fault.
