Inspect the whole-home surge protector
A whole-home surge protector at the main panel has a lifespan of 5 to 7 years and may have already taken a hit you never noticed. Check the indicator light and replace the unit if any LED is out.
Test smoke and CO detector batteries
Press the test button on every smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Swap the backup batteries if the chirp is weak. After a power loss the alarms must run on battery for at least 7 days.
Verify sump pump wiring
The sump pump should be plugged into a dedicated GFCI circuit, not shared with the freezer or the laundry. Confirm the GFCI trips and resets cleanly so the pump runs the moment the basement floods.
Trim trees away from the service line
Branches over the service-entrance wire will rip the mast off the house in a high wind. Cut anything within 10 feet of the meter and the line. ComEd will trim the utility side if you call them.
Check the meter base
Walk to the meter and look for rust streaks, loose conduit, or a meter that wiggles in its socket. Water gets in fast during a storm and a loose meter base can arc when the wind shakes it.
Charge phones and battery banks early
At the first severe weather alert, plug in every phone, tablet, laptop, and portable battery bank. A power loss in the middle of charging is no help. Top everything off while the lights are still on.
Use point-of-use TVSS strip protectors
Plug critical electronics like the TV, the home office computer, and the modem into a quality TVSS surge strip. This is a second layer of protection below the whole-home unit at the panel.
Know where the main breaker is
Walk the family to the electrical panel and show them the main breaker. If the storm causes a fire or a downed line, throwing the main is the first move. Practice once when the weather is calm.
