Original knob-and-tube was safe at the loads of its era. Today it is risky because the jacket is brittle, the system has no path to ground, and modern insulation packed around it traps heat. Most insurance carriers will not write a policy on a home with active knob-and-tube. Replacing it is the right call for a century home.

What you'll find inside a century-old Wheaton home

Wheaton was built before most of the suburbs that surround it. The streets near downtown, around Adams Park, and along the Northside Historic District hold homes that go back to the 1890s. The wider city map carries Victorian and Queen Anne homes from the gas-light era, American Foursquares and Craftsman bungalows from the streetcar years, Tudor Revival cottages from the 1930s, postwar ranches from the 1950s, and split-levels from the early 1960s.

Every one of those eras used a different way of running power through the walls. When our Wheaton electrician opens a wall cavity, we are reading a small piece of electrical history. Here is what we find inside each era, and what we usually have to do about it.

1890s
1900s

Victorian and Queen Anne

These homes were lit by gas first and wired for power later. Inside the attic and the wall cavities we find knob-and-tube, the original residential wiring method. Bare copper rides on porcelain knobs and passes through porcelain tubes where it crosses a stud. There is no ground wire. Many ceiling boxes still hold the iron pipe that once fed a gas chandelier.

Today: a full home rewire is the usual outcome. Modern insurers will not write a policy with active knob-and-tube. We pull new copper Romex circuit by circuit, ground every box, and add AFCI breakers to meet the current Wheaton code.

1910s
1920s

Foursquare and Craftsman bungalow

The American Foursquare and the Craftsman bungalow filled out the blocks near the train station during the streetcar years. Most are still wired with knob-and-tube for the original branch circuits. By the late 1920s, some homes added BX (armored cable) in newer rooms or for kitchen circuits. Service panels were small fuse boxes with 30 to 60 amps total.

Today: we replace knob-and-tube room by room, pull a 200 amp panel upgrade, and ground every circuit. The original BX often stays in place if the sheath is solid and the conductors test out clean.

1930s
1940s

Tudor Revival and minimal traditional

Brick Tudor cottages and tight minimal-traditional homes from the late 1930s and 1940s use cloth-insulated wire with rubber underneath. The cloth is the outer jacket. The rubber under it is the actual insulator. Fuse panels are standard, often round Edison-base fuses for the lights and small appliance circuits.

Today: we swap the fuse box for a 200 amp breaker panel, then test the cloth-rubber wire under load. Where the rubber has dried and cracked, we replace the run. Where the rubber is still flexible, the wire often passes and stays.

1950s

Ranch and split-level

The postwar building boom brought the ranch and the split-level to the south and west sides of Wheaton. These homes used early Romex, with a paper-wrapped neutral and no separate ground. Most outlets are two-prong. Service was 60 amps to a single bus-bar panel with a handful of fuses.

Today: the panel upgrade to 200 amps is the headline job. While we are at it, we ground every outlet, swap two-prong to three-prong where the run allows, and add GFCI protection to kitchens, baths, and the laundry circuit.

1960s
1970s

Early modern wiring

By the early 1960s, modern copper Romex with a bare ground took over. Service jumped to 100 amps, and three-prong grounded outlets became the standard. Panels from this era are still serviceable, although a few brands earned a bad reputation and need a full swap.

Today: the work is mostly code retrofit. We add AFCI breakers for the bedroom circuits, GFCI breakers for the kitchen and bathroom circuits, and a whole-home surge protector at the main lug. A 200 amp service upgrade follows if the home now runs central air, an EV, or a finished basement.
